AS OF MARCH 2011
Independence Party Report
This is a brief update on what ZAMCAN has been up to so far. On October 23rd, 2010, we organized 46th Independence Party celebrations where we also honoured the founders of ZAMCAN with certificates. At the same event we also recognized the work Mrs. Mabel Opoku and Mr. Alan Wadham have done for the community. The DISCOVER ZAMBIA magazine was also launched at the same event by His Excellency, Zambian High Commissioner to Canada, Dr. Nevers Mumba.
Adoption of ZACAFA By-law
On January 29th, 2011, the regional and provincial leaders adopted a by-law to govern the affairs of a newly formed ZAMBIAN CANADIAN FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION (ZACAFA). I hereby attach the adopted by-law for your keep.
Zambian Canadian Conference
Consequent to the adoption of the ZACAFA by-law, the interim committee, chaired by the ZAMCAN President Charles Mwewa, has decided to host the first Zambian Canadian Conference in Vancouver, BC, on September 24th, 2011. The BC Friendship Association have been tasked with the responsibility of organizing the event with the direction of the interim committee. Logistics to facilitate for accommodation and other related issues are being looked into by the CB people. Meanwhile, if you wish to attend, you could make personal arrangements in terms of lodging, flight, etc. When the BC people come back to us with more details, we shall communicate to you likewise.
Quarterly Briefs
Beginning the first quarter of this year, H.E, Dr. Mumba will be conducting briefs to acquaint the leaders of the Zambian Canadian associations across the nation on pertinent developments both here in Canada and at home.
Potluck & AGM 2011
The ZAMCAN Board will this Saturday, March 19th, 2011 meet via teleconference to discuss various aspects of ZAMCAN administration, including Potluck, AGM, and other businesses. Kindly, forward your views of the venues you wish us to consider where to hold this year’s Potluck. We would also like to begin discussing the 47th Zambian Independence Party celebrations early this year. If you have ideas which could enable us reach many of our people at a reasonable cost, please do not hesitate to send us those suggestions. You may send them to any member of the Board.
Please note that, subject to the new ZAMCAN constitution which was adopted on April 24th, 2010, the ZAMCAN Board has a two-year mandate, for the current Board, this shall not run out until April 2012. For this reason, this year’s AGM will concentrate on beefing up the Board which at the moment needs more reinforcement. If you are willing to serve our great community as a Board member, please consider to attend this year’s AGM and volunteer your services. At this year’s AGM, for the first time, we shall also discuss a budget to help us run our affairs effectively.
ZAMCAN Website
We have begun to make improvements to our website, www.zamcan.com. Due to limited manpower, we can only make improvements as time becomes available. However, by the end of this year, we should be able to fully update the website. We also intend to post ads there as a small way of raising funds. To all those who own businesses, organizations, charities or websites, please help us fundraise by advertising your services and products on the ZAMCAN website. All you need to send us is the name of your company, business or service; the website address; a logo; and a brief write-up about your services. Subject to the Board, to advertise will cost you only $30 per year.
ZAMCAN Youth Ontario
Our youth continue to be our first priority. Ms. Chishimba Kaela has been co-opted into the ZAMCAN Board as the Board member responsible for Youth Affairs. We are currently looking for young people to join our youth wing and be part of the youth revolution in ZAMCAN. To get involved, please contact Ms. Kaela. Meanwhile, ZAMCAN would like to thank the Masomo Foundation for awarding three of the youth with sufficient connection to Zambia beautiful scholarships at the function held on March 15th, 2011 in Toronto. The recipients of the scholarships were: Musonda Yamfwa, Theodore Kahiya and Nyishi Muchima.
